The Neighborhood Mama was founded in 2015 by TayShawn (Tay) Morgan as a doula business dedicated to supporting families in the DMV area through birth, postpartum, and lactation services. Over the years, Tay recognized the growing challenges within the community, including a lack of resources, diminishing sense of community, and inadequate support systems. In 2022, she transformed The Neighborhood Mama into a nonprofit organization to address these critical issues.
As a mama of six who has experienced the journey without a village of her own, Tay deeply understands the struggles and disadvantages that many families face. This personal experience has fueled her passion for advocacy and community-building. Through The Neighborhood Mama, Tay works tirelessly to restore traditions, nurture family dynamics, and create accessible support services that empower families to thrive.

Tay also shares her own stories to inspire others and to highlight the importance of rebuilding a strong, interconnected community. Her mission is to provide a space where families can find resources, connection, and hope, bringing back the essence of what it means to be supported by a village.

Tay on Birthwork and Community:
"As a birth sister and community advocate, I love supporting families as they navigate through their full spectrum journey of parenthood, whatever that looks like for them. I wholeheartedly trust that when women and their families have all of the options and resources made available to them, they can be uplifted and heard as they weigh out the options to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. I trust women, I trust birth, I trust community. I trust and welcome the process, the shift, and the transformation needed in order for new life to emerge."
